As the CSU Cheerleading Team prepared for Laker Madness on October 20, 2016, I had the chance to sit in on a practice three days before the event. Lakers, you are in for a treat!

Antonio Jones’ direction as the new Coach has prepared them well. He is diligent in correcting their mistakes, bringing out their best assets and showing off their strengths. Kayla Lumpkin, a sophomore and business major, says “He is hardcore because he wants us to do our best and not settle for mediocrity. It is definitely tough love.”

I have seen the program grow over the past years and I am pleased to say they have a tremendous amount of potential.

Kendall Cherry, a 1st year veteran, is a senior and an accounting major. She says this athletic season has brought great leadership and sportsmanship. Cherry is looking forward to what this year has in store for the team.

With a team of twenty-seven young ladies, they can definitely fill the gym and bring out a crowd. Expect tumbling, partner stunts, and great energy. With more dedication and hard work they may be a force to be reckoned with!

Since they are still trying to finalize a routine and incorporate one more 8-count of material, there are still a few kinks that are being worked out. The synchronization and overall performance level needs some fine tuning as well. With a bit of luck and skill they should be able to pull through for everyone coming to Laker Madness.

Lumpkin stated that so far her rookie year is full of encouragement. She is positive this year will bring great routines and fun.

While their athletic season is just beginning, they have the ability to become even better and lead the program in the right direction for years to follow.
