I had the opportunity to experience the Clayton State Sleep out for the Homeless event FIRSTHAND and IN PERSON on this past Friday. I emphasize IN PERSON because in order to fully understand what this event was focusing on, you had to have experienced it firsthand. I think it's very shoddy journalism on the Bent Tree's behalf to create a story based on assumption, not taking the necessary time to actually speak to the sponsors of the event. This event did far more than merely have students dress up as homeless people and sleep on the SAC green. On Friday, the department of Campus Life gave students a firsthand look at what so many people experience on a day to day basis. Each day, we pass by someone who is dealing with Homelessness and barely take the time to even get to understand who they are or what they are experiencing. While we go home to our warm homes and eat hot home cooked meals, these people have to stay outside and look for the next place they are going to call home for the night. Each night these people have to come together with others and try to stay warm, hope for their next meal, and pray that they don’t come to harm over night. Before I did this event, I was certain I had experienced Hell firsthand. I’d fallen on hard times but still I had a place to call home, even if it wasn’t my own. There are other people who aren’t that blessed but instead of complain, they find some way to make it work out until opportunity knocks once again. We glance over these people without giving their situations a second though. After Friday night, I’ll never do that again! Again Bent Tree, before you knock something, verify your information and please do more than just look at things from the outside peering in.

The facts are as follows. This event is sponsored by Campus Life, not DEEP. It is good to know the facts before typing incorrect information. The purpose of the young man sitting on main street was to see if people would stop by and get information on the event and donate. No one was trying to imitate a homeless person.

I believe that Campus Life is getting their "hands dirty" by sponsoring the event and attacking the issue that students are not aware of. We know there is homeless people, but do we really know why many people are homeless, no we don't. Also, Campus Life has assisted with serving food at homeless shelters and various other community events. Have you been at any of the events? Are you contributing to any of the warm clothes drive that is going along with the SLEEPOUT?

Question to the editor. Do you know what a homeless person looks like or are you making an assumption off of the images from Hollywood. A homeless person can look just like you. A homeless person can be sitting next to you in one of your classes. A homeless person can have a regular job. Why? Not all faces of homelessness are the same. There are those people who just do not make enough money to afford rent. There are those people who made a ad investment. There are those people who lost their homes due to city municipals buying their land. There are people who lost their homes to fires and natural disasters, but did not have proper insurance to cover that.

First of all Bent Tree, before you put out an article dogging out what people are trying to do, how about you get your facts straight.
#1- This is NOT a DEEP event. had you taken the time to speak to the person at the table you would have gotten the proper information about who was sponsoring the event.
#2 - On EVERY flyer and poster about this event it clearly states it is to raise AWARENESS about the homeless. Not recreate homelessness, not try to show what its like to be homeless - it is to raise students AWARENESS about homelessness and some of it many causes. Campus Life is asking students to give up a few hours of comfort in order for us to become more sensitive to the issues. What did you want them to do take us to Piedmont Park and drop us off??
#3 - Dude, have you seen The Soloist? Have you seen The Pursuit of Happyness? You DO know they are not Hollywood make believe - they are TRUE STORIES of REAL PEOPLE who were homeless. If anyone is perputating a stereotype it is you in this article. Did you know that many homeless people HAVE jobs, they just cant afford to pay rent? You WOULD HAVE if you had read the statistics on that cardboard box you seem to be so pissed off about. Yes, when the event is over I will have a hot shower and a warm bed to go back to, but I will also be a whole lot more informed on why and how people become homeless and a lot more open-hearted to the homeless people I may encounter.
#4 - Get your terminolgy right. Its not a "Camp Out". It has never been promoted as a "Camp Out". This is not the Boy Scouts. Campus LIfe is doing something different to get our attention and I appreciate the effort. (Oh and for your information, Campus Life has sponsored a few trips to the soup kitchen downtown and invited the Director of the Atlanta Task Force to come speak on campus - where is the article on that?)

Dude, I know you want people to read your little paper, but the least you could do is get your facts straight before you publish an article. Now go to Wal-Mart to buy some stuff to donate and quit being a hater.

The Human Race Machine was not apart of the Health Fair and was not sponsored by University Health Services. This was actually sponsored by DEEP (Diversity Educational Experiences for Peers) to help transition into our Diversity and Disability Week and our Affirmative Action Bake Sale and various other cultural events during the week.

I am aware of the sleepout event and commend the department of campus life for raising awareness, which is all the event is intended to do. A bigger mockery of homelessness would be to send a group of students to sleep in a shelter, when obviously there are not enough shelters to accomodate every homeless person and second, we would be taking up space from legitimately homeless persons. Several other institutions have done this event, most recently the SGA at Armstrong Atlantic as an opportunity to raise awareness, not pretend; to educate no simulate. The point is that, particularly during this time of year, we often forget that their are others who have no warm homes or beds to go to. The event is an opportunity to reflect on that, and humble ourselves, and challenge--not perpetuate, stereotypes of homelessness. I will be there on friday night, sleeping out for the homeless.
