Code Orange: CSU vs. Lander University

Code Orange at Clayton State Tomorrow

Lakers vs. Lander is “#1 vs. #2” Rematch

Morrow, Ga., Jan. 24, 2012 — The Clayton State University Campus Events Council (CEC) is getting behind the defending national champion Lakers women’s basketball team.

In preparation for tomorrow’s game against the 24th ranked Bearcats of Lander University, CEC will be holding a Code Orange spirit rally in the lobby of the Athletics & Fitness Center from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Spirit Table in the lobby will feature free face painting, Clayton State tattoos, pom poms, and poster making. In addition, CEC is urging everyone to wear orange, unless they still have a “BEAT LANDER” t-shirt left over from last year.

Those shirts were given out on Feb. 10, 2011, prior to the “#1 vs. #2” game wherein the undefeated Lakers edged the then-top ranked and undefeated Bearcats 83-81 in the Athletics & Fitness Center on a last second basket in the lane by Tanisha Woodward. Lander, currently 13-3 and the first place team in the East Division of the Peach Belt Conference, will certainly be ready on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Game time is 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

The Lakers, currently ranked second in the nation, are 18-1 overall and 8-0 and in first place in the West Division of the Peach Belt Conference after defeating Flagler 80-44 and Armstrong Atlantic 93-48 over this past weekend.

As an added attraction to the Lander game, Clayton State senior Brittany Hall is only 10 points shy of becoming the eighth player in Laker women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points.

Then, On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Lakers will welcome USC Aiken to the Athletics & Fitness Center for another doubleheader, with the women’s opening game starting at 3:30 p.m.(note the earlier than typical start time.) Although the 15th ranked Pacers were recently beaten by UNC Pembroke, they have been ranked as high as 11th nationally this season, and are the last team to defeat the Lakers, in the one-point overtime decision on their own floor in last year’s Peach Belt tournament. Indeed, that 73-72 result was the only game Clayton State lost during the national championship season. Prior to that meeting, Clayton State had defeated Aiken 66-60 at Aiken in a nationally-televised game in January 2011.

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
